Subaru of America, Inc. Establishes New All-Time Sales Record
- Company breaks record with 2 selling months remaining -
- Follows increased sales in last 3 years -
CHERRY HILL, N.J., Nov. 3, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America, Inc. today announced it has broken all previous yearly sales results, with two months of 2010 sales remaining. The company surpassed its 2009 record of 216,652 unit sales and sales are up 23% year-to-date in 2010 on the back of strong demand for Legacy, Outback, Forester and Impreza models.
The company's performance is all the more remarkable because it has continually been a top performer over the past three years and did not experience the drop in sales that other auto brands did in 2008 and 2009. Prior to this growth, Subaru regularly posted yearly sales of 170-180,000 units and now projects sales of around 250,000 for the fiscal year.
Tim Colbeck, senior vice president of sales said, "These record results and our recent sustained success are due to strong brand fundamentals and so we believe we are just getting started. Our products, dealer network and brand image are all at best-ever levels. We are excited about the future for Subaru.
Tom Doll, COO said, "We are very pleased to have set a new sales record by giving customers what they want: cars that are practical, reliable and fun-to-drive with all-wheel-drive as our backbone. We have two full months to go before the end of this year and so this is a real breakthrough year for the company. I thank all of our retailers and employees for making these outstanding results possible. We could not have accomplished this without the dedication and commitment of our retail organization and employees."

New Electric Subaru
The name Subaru usually conjures up thoughts of all-wheel-drive rally machines. However, its parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, announced today that Subaru will be launching the tiny front-wheel-drive Stella Plug-In Electric Vehicle in Japan next month.
The Stella EV is based on the Subaru Stella mini car sold in Japan. The four-passenger car combines a small lightweight body with an efficient electric powertrain to provide an ideal means of transportation for daily commuters.
At the heart of the Stella EV is a 346 volt high-performance lithium-ion battery. The battery can be re-charged up to 80 percent of its capacity in 15 minutes using the quick-charging system. A full charge takes 8 hours using a standard 100-volt household power outlet or 5 hours using a 200-volt hook-up. Around town the battery also recovers some if its energy through regenerative braking.
Driving the front wheels is a 47 kW (64 hp) electric motor that makes 170 Nm (125 lb-ft) of torque. Top speed for the Stella EV is 100 kmh (62 mph) which might not make it a star at the rally course, but it will be properly suited for driving around town. The range is about 90 km (56 miles).
Fuji Heavy Industries will sell the Stella EV directly in Japan with 170 units planned for this fiscal year ending in March 2010. Authorized Subaru dealerships will be set up to service the cars. The price will be 4,725,000 yen ($48,851) including consumption tax. If that sounds a little steep, don't worry. The Japanese "Next Generation Vehicle Promotion Center" will offer a subsidy of up to 1,380,000 yen ($14,267) and the Stella EV may qualify for additional tax reductions as well.

Another Happy Customer
Trip back home went smooth. WRX did great even with summer tires in a snowstorm around the NV/OR border. I couldn't be happier with the car.
It was worth the long wait. It's good to be back home...was a long Christmas break with too much driving!
Thanks,
Jason

Toyota US Sales Halt Deals Blow to Image, Earnings
NEW YORK -- Toyota's suspension of U.S. sales on an unprecedented scale to fix faulty gas pedals deals a blow to the automaker's reputation for quality and came amid intense pressure from the Obama administration. The Obama administration said it pressed Toyota to protect consumers who own vehicles under recall and to stop building new cars with the problem. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told WGN Radio in Chicago that "the reason Toyota decided to do the recall and to stop manufacturing was because we asked them to."
Toyota dealers said they were concerned the move would hamper sales. They hoped parts to fix the problem could be distributed quickly. John McEleney, who owns a Clinton, Iowa, Toyota dealership, said the sales stoppage affects about 60 percent of the inventory on his lot. He said he was hopeful Toyota would come up with a fix soon — especially because the longer a vehicle stays on a dealer lot, the more money a dealer pays in interest fees. "Short term, it's going to be difficult," he said. "It will certainly set us back, but I think the impact will be very short lived."
